The CCO's Lee Strebel Memorial
Youth Concerto Competition
provides young area musicians the chance to compete,
at the highest level, for a performance opportunity
with a first-rate, professional orchestral ensemble.
Open to all instruments and voice, the
competition takes place each spring.
Three judges with expertise on different instruments
provide each of the contestants with written feedback.
In addition to competing for a chance to
perform with the orchestra, students that compete
are eligible for youth performance initiatives and masterclasses.
Last April's competition had fifteen contestants on seven differentinstruments spreadacross the Junior and Senior divisions.
The winner of the Senior Division
was Emerson Millar of Ithaca, New York. Emerson,
who last performed with the CCO as
winner of the Junior Division in 2008,
will perform the first movement of the Barber concerto
at the CCO's March 20th Orchestral Concert.
The second place winner of the Senior Division,
also from Ithaca, was trumpeter Peter Stammer.
Peter will perform Porrino Concertino on the same concert.
Both young artists will receive stipends to assist with
expenses related to their musical development.
Honorable mention and stipends were also
awarded to Senior division cellist Marza Wilks
and Junior division cellist Alta Millar, also of Ithaca.
The competition has grown every year and attracts
students from the Juilliard School,
Eastman School and Syracuse.
Specific rules and qualifications for the
2010 competition will be available on the
website after January.
